Thailand expands surf therapy into science-based coastal wellness experience

Thailand is pioneering a new model that transforms surfing into a broader coastal wellness experience, blending mindfulness, nature, and community for travellers seeking restorative escapes beyond traditional beach holidays.

Thailand is trying to turn surfing into something broader than a sport. In Phang-nga and Phuket, the Tourism Authority of Thailand has been promoting a new wellness-led model that blends time in the water with mindfulness, nature and community experiences, framing it as part of the country’s wider "Healing Is the New Luxury" message for travellers seeking something more restorative than a standard beach break. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the concept is being developed as a science-based coastal wellness offer rather than a medical treatment.

The idea has been tested through pilot and showcase journeys in Phang-nga, with the authority working alongside Prince of Songkla University, La Vita Sana, Memories Surf House and Waves for Change from South Africa. Those sessions were designed to examine how surf-based wellbeing could fit into Thailand’s quality-led tourism strategy, and to build what officials describe as a trust-building model ahead of the concept’s presentation at Thailand Health Excellence 2026. For visitors, that means the experience is being shaped as a structured programme rather than an informal surf holiday.

Recent international creator and media trips have taken the message further. TAT said the Amazing Thailand Surf & Wellness Journey and the Amazing Thailand x Insta360 creator itinerary brought participants from markets including the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand to Phuket and Phang-nga in August. The itineraries combined surfing with forest bathing in Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park, kayaking near Takua Pa’s Little Amazon, visits to Takua Pa Old Town and Phuket Old Town, and farm-to-table dining, showing how the region can support longer, more varied trips.

For travellers, the appeal is less about chasing waves and more about the setting. Phang-nga offers quieter coastlines, easier access to nature and a softer pace than some of Thailand’s busier beach destinations, while Phuket adds transport links, dining and broader holiday infrastructure. TALAY, an ocean therapy retreat in Phang-nga, says the area is only about 25 to 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, underlining how practical the region can be for short wellness escapes or longer stays built around recovery, movement and rest. The wider concept also suggests Thailand is looking to widen its coastal offer without losing the qualities that already draw visitors: beaches, food, local culture and outdoor activity.
