IndiGo launches direct flights from Gaya to Bangkok, easing Buddhist tourism and holiday travel

IndiGo to operate bi-weekly non-stop flights between Gaya and Bangkok from 26 October, simplifying travel for pilgrims and leisure visitors and strengthening cultural ties.

IndiGo will begin non-stop flights between Gaya in Bihar and Bangkok on 26 October, giving travellers a direct link that should make trips to Thailand considerably simpler, especially for pilgrims and leisure visitors heading between Bodh Gaya and the Thai capital. According to the airline’s announcement reported by ANI, the service will operate twice a week.

The new route removes the need for a connecting flight, which should cut journey time and reduce the hassle of changing planes for passengers from Bihar and nearby parts of eastern India. NDTV Travel reported that the flights are planned for Mondays and Thursdays, a schedule that may suit short breaks as well as longer temple-and-city itineraries. For travellers, that could mean easier access to Bangkok for onward holidays elsewhere in Thailand, or a more straightforward return journey after visiting Buddhist sites in Gaya.

The route also reflects the long-standing religious and cultural ties between the two destinations. Both ANI and other reports said the service is expected to support Buddhist tourism, with Gaya already drawing visitors connected to Bodh Gaya and Bangkok serving as a major international gateway for Thailand. For many travellers, the practical value lies in convenience: a direct flight from a region with growing outbound demand can make Thailand feel much closer and more accessible.

The launch comes as IndiGo remains the dominant airline in India’s domestic market, according to figures from the Ministry of Civil Aviation cited by ANI, which said the carrier held a 64.9 per cent share in May. While those figures relate to domestic flying, they underline the airline’s scale as it expands international links. For holidaymakers, the immediate impact is likely to be felt in better route choice and a more direct option for planning Thailand trips from Bihar.
