Songkhla accelerates transformation into a regional travel hub with year-round appeal in 2026

With a surge in regional visitors and targeted campaigns revitalising its appeal, Songkhla is evolving from a transit point to a vibrant, year-round destination in southern Thailand for 2026.

Songkhla is emerging as one of southern Thailand’s more practical travel bets in 2026, with the province drawing a steady flow of regional visitors rather than relying on a single peak season. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Songkhla welcomed more than 4.44 million visitors between January and July 2026, generating over 32,227 million baht in revenue, a sign that the area is moving beyond a pure transit role and into a more substantial stay-and-spend destination.

For travellers, the biggest draw remains proximity. Songkhla sits on the Malaysian border and is especially easy to reach from nearby crossings and road links, which has made Hat Yai the province’s main hub for short breaks, shopping trips and family visits. Malaysian tourists accounted for 948,802 person-trips to Songkhla in the first seven months of 2026, while Singapore contributed another 28,248, according to reporting on Tourism Authority figures. The pattern matters because it helps explain why hotels, restaurants and transport operators in Hat Yai have remained busy even outside major holiday periods.

That demand is now being reinforced by events and targeted campaigns. The Tourism Authority of Thailand is staging "Amazing Thailand Chinese New Year 2026 @ HATYAI" from 17 to 20 February along Sanehanusorn Road and Thammanoonvithi Road, with organisers expecting more than 50,000 visitors and more than 100 food and lifestyle stalls. Earlier in the year, TAT also launched Expat Travel Fair 2026 @Hatyai to push longer-stay travel and special-value packages, signalling that Songkhla is being marketed less as an overnight stop and more as a place to linger.

Beyond Hat Yai, Songkhla’s appeal lies in its mix of heritage, food and easy day-trip variety. Songkhla Old Town offers shophouses, local cafés and a distinctive blend of Thai, Chinese and Malay influences, while Songkhla Lake gives visitors a slower, more scenic alternative to the busier city core. That broader identity is also central to the province’s branding push: officials want to position Songkhla as a creative food destination and develop religious, cultural and community-based tourism rather than depend only on mass-market spending.

The travel outlook suggests the province is likely to keep benefiting from short-haul regional demand, especially around holiday periods. During the Eid al-Adha and school break window in late May and early June 2026, nearly 300,000 Malaysian visitors travelled to southern Thailand, underlining how quickly demand can rise when border travel is convenient and costs are manageable. Hat Yai hotel occupancy also climbed to about 80% in late August and early September, coinciding with Malaysia’s National Day and school holidays, which shows how closely Songkhla’s visitor economy is tied to the regional calendar.

Looking ahead, the province is being asked to do more than simply absorb cross-border traffic. TAT has set a 2027 revenue target of 55.9 billion baht for Songkhla-Hat Yai and wants to lift the area from gateway city to higher-value destination. For travellers, that could mean more curated food, culture and local-experience options, but the core attraction is likely to remain the same: easy access, familiar regional prices and a destination where a border trip can still feel like a proper break.
