A recent roundup of five top-end stays in the Thai capital argues that the best choice depends less on brand name than on the kind of trip you want, whether that is a retreat by the Chao Phraya or a polished base for exploring the centre of town.

At the river’s edge, Capella Bangkok stands out for intimacy rather than scale. With only 101 accommodations, it aims for a highly personal feel, and the draw is immediate: expansive views across the water, especially at sunset, straight from the room.
