Koh Samui redefines wellness with its bespoke, plant-based retreats and holistic experiences

Once renowned for its beaches and resorts, Koh Samui is now emerging as Thailand’s premier wellness destination, blending luxury, plant-based cuisine, and personalised health programmes across three distinct properties.

Koh Samui has long sold itself as an easygoing Thai island with a wide choice of places to stay, but its wellness offer now looks far more ambitious than a simple spa menu. A recent stay at three very different properties showed how far the island has moved beyond conventional resort pampering, with luxury fitness, meditation, detox and plant-based dining now woven into the guest experience. For travellers deciding where to base themselves in Thailand, the island is becoming a serious option for those who want a holiday that feels restorative as well as indulgent.

At W Koh Samui, the appeal is a polished, high-energy take on wellbeing. The resort’s spa includes seven treatment rooms and Asia’s first THAIMAZCAL herbal steam room, according to Marriott, while the property’s signature approach centres on flexible service and a strong sense of privacy. That combination is likely to suit guests who want ocean-view villas, a lively atmosphere and the option to dip into wellness rather than commit to a retreat-style stay. The food offering has also broadened, with plant-based dishes now sitting comfortably alongside the resort’s broader dining programme.

Further inland, Kapuhala offers a very different pace. The property is entirely vegan and built around a retreat feel, with just a handful of villas and farmhouses set in the hills above the sea. Its restaurant, Halapua, serves fully plant-based Sicilian-inspired food, which makes it stand out even on an island with increasingly health-conscious dining. For visitors, the draw is not only the menu but the sense of escape: sea views, sunrise yoga, a saltwater infinity pool, sauna, steam room and ice bath all make it easy to build a stay around rest and recovery rather than sightseeing.

Kamalaya sits somewhere between retreat centre and luxury hideaway, but with the most structured wellness credentials of the three. The resort says it combines Eastern healing traditions with Western medical research and offers 19 programmes, from detox to stress recovery and weight management, supported by more than 50 certified wellness professionals. Its hillside setting and carefully designed rooms are part of the experience, but so too is the ability to follow a guided plan or simply pick and choose from the activity schedule. For travellers who want more than a spa day, Kamalaya offers something closer to a personalised reset.

What links all three properties is the growing emphasis on plant-based food that feels like part of the holiday rather than a compromise. That matters for vegetarian and vegan travellers, but also for anyone who wants lighter meals without giving up flavour. Across the island, the message is clear: Koh Samui is no longer just a beach destination with a few wellness add-ons. It is increasingly a place where the accommodation, food and activity programme work together, and where visitors can shape a trip around how they want to feel when they leave.

For travellers planning a Thailand trip, that makes Koh Samui especially appealing in the hotter months, when a stay centred on pools, spa treatments and unhurried meals can be more attractive than fast-paced touring. It also helps that the island now offers clear choice: W for style and flexibility, Kapuhala for a fully vegan retreat, and Kamalaya for a deeper wellness programme. However long you stay, the island’s new identity is hard to miss.
