IndiGo launches direct flights from Gaya to Bangkok, boosting Buddhist and leisure travel

Indian carrier IndiGo will start non-stop flights between Gaya and Bangkok from 26 October 2026, offering a direct route for pilgrims and tourists, and strengthening international connectivity for Bihar.

IndiGo will begin non-stop flights between Gaya and Bangkok on 26 October 2026, opening a new option for travellers heading from Bihar to Thailand and, in the other direction, for visitors making the Buddhist pilgrimage circuit in eastern India. According to reports on the carrier’s announcement, the service will run twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, giving passengers a direct link between Gaya and the Thai capital for the first time.

For holidaymakers, the new route could make trip planning simpler and less tiring. Gaya sits close to Bodh Gaya, home to the Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important places in Buddhism. Bangkok, meanwhile, remains one of Thailand’s most popular entry points for leisure travel, with onward connections to beaches, islands and city breaks. The direct service is therefore likely to appeal not only to pilgrims, but also to tourists looking for a smoother route into Thailand.

At present, IndiGo has not published a starting fare for the new non-stop flights. Its website shows a one-stop Gaya-Bangkok itinerary via Kolkata at about ₹15,576, with some fares rising to around ₹20,000. The airline has said bookings will be available through its website, mobile app and authorised travel partners, while timings are listed in local time at each end of the route.

The addition also broadens IndiGo’s Thailand network, which already includes flights to Bangkok from several major Indian cities, as well as services to Phuket and Krabi. For travellers in Bihar, the practical effect is likely to be the biggest gain: less reliance on connections through other cities, easier access to Thailand, and a more direct international gateway from a region with deep cultural and religious ties to the country.
